The PFA Team of the Year has just been announced for the current season with a few eyebrows being raised over the only non-Liverpool/Manchester City inclusion: Paul Pogba. So as people debate whether his penalties and assists are worth his inclusion in the eleven, we thought we’d look back to some of the last few PFA Premier League Teams of the Year and explore some of the unexpected, underappreciated and wonderful PFA TOTY one-hit-wonders.

We start way back in 2008 when Emmanuel Adebayor turned into one of the best strikers in Europe for a year. Flying onto Cesc Fabregas assists left, right and centre – Adebayor racked up a brilliant return of 24 goals in 07/08.

In 2010 we were given the magnificent defensive duo of Thomas Vermaelen and Richard Dunne. Injuries and own goals galore. Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia were also in the midfield!

2012 saw long-curly-haired Newcastle hero Fabricio Coloccini included for his immense defensive performances in a season where the Toon reached the dizzy heights of fifth. And in 2014 Luke Shaw made the team for his last season at Southampton when they looked like they were onto another winner with a young, attacking left-back. Turns out he’s no Gareth Bale.

There was room for Alexis Sanchez, Wes Morgan, Marcos Alonso in their respective brilliant 2015, ‘16 and ‘18 seasons – all three might find themselves in the worst team of this season. And Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet both deserve shouts for being able to take really good free-kicks and being a hell of a lot of fun to watch in 2015 and 2016.

And there was Pascal Chimbonda in 2006.

So yeah, Hazard probably should have made the team instead of Pogba.
