Issue Three of The Squall is here – our much-anticipated Sliding Doors issue! Find the download links below.

The Squall supports freelance writers during the Covid-19 crisis. For it to continue supporting this community we need people to buy the magazine every month. We recommend £3, but if that’s a stretch or, conversely, if you can afford more, then whatever’s possible is very welcome. You can pay directly into The Squall’s bank account (sort code 40-05-17 and account number 71515942) or via PayPal at Thank you to those of you who have already donated. Your contributions have certainly helped!

In this issue, football’s freelance community explore some alternative footballing realities, such as:

What if the Icelandic volcano hadn’t erupted in 2010, disrupting flights across Europe? Alex Hess

What if Poland had equalised in the last minute of the final qualifier and England hadn’t made it to Italia 90? Ben Kosky

What if Alex Ferguson had retired in 2001, and Sven-Göran Eriksson had replaced him at Old Trafford? Richard Jolly

Since The Squall launched at the beginning of this pandemic, we have been delighted with the endlessly creative response to the project. The theme for next month’s release is ‘Red’. While the deadline for our fourth issue has passed, you can submit pitches to for our fifth issue – ‘Ground’ – to be interpreted as imaginatively as you like. You’ve got until 12 July to send in your pitches (NOT completed articles) and we’ll get in touch from 13 July.

If your pitch does not make it into an issue of The Squall, fear not, as it may be we can use some further down the line in The Blizzard.

We hope you enjoy this third issue, and thanks again for your continued support.
